Brown Adipose Tissue (BAT) is a thermogenic tissue that can dissipate chemical energy as heat. Research in our lab has shown that BAT transplantation improved glucose homeostasis in a mouse model and various researchers have suggested BAT as a therapeutic target against obesity and diabetes. Since cell transplantation is a more translatable approach than tissue transplantation for humans, for my thesis project, I am working on the various cell types in the Stromal Vascular Fraction (SVF) of Brown Adipose Tissue (BAT) to identify specific cell types responsible for improving the glucose homeostasis of recipients, the underlying mechanism for the improvement and to develop efficient transplantation techniques for these cells. I also focus on other therapies for obesity, like exercise, in conjunction with the BAT SVF and on the role of these cells in mitigating age-induced decline in metabolic health and cardiovascular disease.
