Cardiovascular disease is one of the major causes of death in today's world. One of the main features of cardiac disease is the permanent and irreversible loss of heart tissue which is damaging for the patient's health and recovery. One of the main questions plaguing regenerative medicine is the extent of cell regeneration in human heart. Development of therapies to facilitate regeneration or survival of lost heart tissue would have an enormous impact on the health and well being of heart patients.  I'm using zebrafish as my model organism to study regeneration of cardiomyocytes as zebrafish can replenish up to 60% of lost heart muscle or cardiomyocytes (CM) without adverse effects or scarring. Very few factors involved in this process have been yet identified. My goal is study the process of regeneration of cardiomyocytes in zebrafish and discover other factors involved in this process.
