Join us for MLS Seminar featuring Dr. Erik Sontheimer, Professor in the RNA Therapeutics Institute!

Dr. Erik Sontheimer's research focuses on CRISPR-Cas systems and how RNA guides Cas proteins to target DNA, a key mechanism of bacterial adaptive immunity. His lab investigates how CRISPR works at a molecular level, how it can be controlled or inhibited, and how natural variants of Cas proteins can be harnessed for precise genome editing. His lab also explores questions like how guide RNAs can be optimized, how anti-CRISPR proteins regulate activity, and what features make CRISPR systems more efficient or compact for therapeutic applications.
