Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. Join us for MLS Seminar featuring Dr. Samuel Walcott, Professor of Mathematical Sciences and Director of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at Worcester Polytechnic Institute!

Sam Walcott uses physical principles at the molecular scale to solve macroscopic problems in biology, e.g. How do a molecule's mechanical properties influence the behavior of a cell? How do single molecule measurements relate to muscle function? To answer such questions, he uses a combination of computer simulations and mathematical analysis, complemented by experiments performed by his collaborators. He is currently Director of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology and Sinclair Professor of Mathematical Sciences at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He was previously faculty in the Mathematics Department at the University of California, Davis and received his Ph.D. in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Cornell University.
