Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. The Samaranch Laboratory is dedicated to developing AAV-based gene therapies for inherited neurological disorders. We specialized in creating innovative therapeutic strategies, focusing on enhancing gene delivery into the central nervous system through direct brain infusions, cerebrosinal fluid injections and in-utero gene transfer.

As a translational neuroscience lab, our research also aims to characterize the tropism and axonal transport of both naturally occurring and capsid-engineered AAV vectors for in vivo gene transfer. We also investigate the immunological implications of the AAV-mediated gene transfer within the central nervous system.

Our current preclinical projects target conditions such as Niemann-pick type A disease, MAO-A deficiency, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease.
