The Kanisicak Lab specializes in in vivo cellular interrogation, investigating the roles of stem cells, fibroblasts, myeloid cells, cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells, and other key cell types in organ homeostasis, repair, and disease. Our research aims to uncover how these cells interact within different organ systems to drive tissue regeneration, fibrosis, and pathological remodeling, with the overarching goal of identifying novel therapeutic targets for regenerative medicine and fibrosis treatment. By leveraging transgenic mouse models and advanced genetic tools, we explore the mechanisms underlying cellular transitions and disease progression.
A significant portion of our work involves deciphering the biology of tissue-resident fibroblasts, including their lineage plasticity, role in fibrosis, and potential to revert to a quiescent state for tissue repair. However, our investigations extend beyond fibroblasts, as we also study immune and vascular cell contributions to disease progression and regeneration. Through gain- and loss-of-function approaches, we aim to develop strategies for scarless healing and functional tissue regeneration.
Recent unpublished findings from our lab highlight the dynamic nature of cellular responses during injury and disease, reinforcing the potential for cell-state-specific therapeutic interventions. We welcome highly motivated graduate students with a passion for in vivo research, genetic modeling, and translational applications who seek to contribute to cutting-edge discoveries in cellular biology and regenerative medicine. Our lab provides a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment to explore fundamental questions in tissue repair and disease pathogenesis.
